5 Ways To Maximise Your Lunch Break

April 07, 2014

Your Lunch Break - the golden hour of the day that breaks up that workload and gives you a chance to focus your mind on something else! Why, then, do the vast majority of us carry on working and don't give ourselves the chance to re-focus and re-energise during that time? Here, we show you 5 ways you can make the most of that hour, and get ready for the afternoon ahead...

Get Your Heart Pumping

The middle of the day is the best time for exercise; studies show physical performance is generally highest and risk of injury lowest. You don't have to lift weights or hit the gym, there are plenty of exercises that you can do at your desk or around the place of business to keep fit and healthy. A simple, brisk walk can burn calories and give you a boost of energy.

Make a Plan

Make the most of your break. Is there a friend you’ve been meaning to catch up with for ages? Why not organise to meet them out for lunch? Your lunch break is also a good opportunity to run errands you've been putting off - a way to lower stress and have a change of scenery from the office. However, make sure you don’t end up spending every break like this - you don’t want to give up your relaxation time completely.

Avoid All Screens

No computers. No television. No tablets. No phones. Nothing. Give your eyes a break! According to PGi, the average office worker spends a staggering 12 hours a day looking at screens. Read a book or stretch your legs instead. Unplug from technology for at least an hour every day.

Do Nothing

Believe it or not doing nothing is an effective way to spend your break, especially if you want to be productive in the afternoon. We spend all our time trying to get everything done as fast as we possibly can, but by the middle of the afternoon you will burn out. Now and again try just sitting and letting your mind wander. If that makes you feel a bit restless eat your lunch without checking emails or Facebook. Even 10 minutes of doing nothing will make you feel re-energized and ready to take on the afternoon, without feeling like you're wasting time with a million things on your to-do list.

Finally, Eat!

This may seem like an obvious one but don't skip on eating your lunch, even if you're dieting in the run up to summer. Your nutritional intake will decide your productivity for the rest of the day, so try to prepare something the night before - this will prevent you being tempted by the greasy spoon over the road.
